Skiing in Wengen at Easter

Ski Club of Great Britain has an excellent article about the Downhill Only Club.

Family skiing made easy this Easter

If you’re going skiing this Easter or still hoping to find a late deal for a ski holiday, and you have slightly older children that can already ski, you may be wondering what to do with them.

Do they go into ski school, with the potential to be a bit bored or perhaps the ski school only runs half day sessions? The Ski Club’s Vanessa Fisher looks at a few alternatives.

Whilst skiing in Wengen at February half term we discovered an English run ski club that ticked all the boxes for our enthusiastic 8 year old. Run by Bob Eastwood, also a member of the Swiss Ski School in Wengen, this ski club is for 7-13 year old children that can ski fast around the mountain all day.

Sitting under the ‘Downhill Only Club’ umbrella, which was founded in Wengen, Switzerland, in 1925, the ‘Coggins’ as the children are called, meet every day during school holidays for a full day of fun skiing on the mountain.

Our 8 year old loved it, made some good friends and at the end of the week, after taking part in a short slalom course, was the proudest little boy collecting his DHO badge and Coggins certificate.

Older children (13yrs+) can slot into the DHO ‘Eagles’ club if they are good, confident skiers and again are up for skiing all day. At half term there was a big group of ‘Eagles’ skiers having a brilliant time with a young, fun ski instructor.

Alternatively if your children have really got the ski bug and want to be pushed to a higher level, The Alpine Training Centre offers children’s ski camps during the school holidays.

Big Gig At High Altitude

Bryan Adams and Kim Wilde are set to headline at ‘SnowpenAir 2012’ in Switzerland.

It will be the 15th staging of the event which takes place at Kleine Scheidegg above Grindelwald and Wengen in the country’s famously spectacular Jungfrau region on 31at March 2012.

Billed as ‘The highest-altitude open-air-concert on snow’ as it takes place 2061 metres above sea level with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks appearing almost close enough to touch in the backdrop, it will be the third time at the ‘venue’ for Canadian rock superstar Bryan Adams.

Brian Adams has twice electrified huge audiences before the stunning setting of the Jungfrau massif, in 2004 and 2007.

In an interview for the magazine Schweizer Illustrierte, the star said that he well remembers one of the best open-air concerts that he has ever played at, “It was on Kleine Scheidegg in Switzerland, in the heart of the mountains. Simply fantastic. Unforgettable!”

Also unforgettable are his international hits including Summer of ’69, Cuts Like a Knife and (Everything I Do) I Do It for You.

Kim Wilde will also be turning up the heat on Kleine Scheidegg with her famous hits such as Kids in America, You Keep Me Hangin’ On and Cambodia! Kim first hit the charts in 1980 and began her comeback in the summer of 2010 with her new album ‘Come Out and Play.’

One surprise success in mainland Europe was her duet with Nena of ’99 Red Balloons’ fame and their song, Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime.
