Switzerland - Swiss memories
The article by Rosie Thomas visiting the Swiss Alps region reminds me of our last two thoroughly enjoyable walking holidays, staying in Wengen.
We can highly recommend the Hotel Alpenrose (0041 33 855 3216; http://www.alpenrose.ch) in Wengen, a family-run hotel with wonderful views toward the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountain range. A wonderful place to visit in late May/early June for walking among the amazing wild-flower meadows at high altitude. And if you book a south-facing room with balcony you can watch the cows being herded up to their summer pastures in the high meadows.
Also worth knowing is that the hotel offers a spring/summer package that includes a Jungfrau pass, which enables visitors free travel on all gondolas, cable cars, trains and buses within the Jungfrau region. This includes travel to the Kleine Scheidegg, Harder Kulm and, of course, the Schynige Platte to experience the wonderful walk undertaken by Rosie Thomas. The views are breathtaking and returning to the hotel for the five-course dinner at the end of the day is definitely a highlight.
